Project Description
New Build House, Tunbridge Wells
Designed and constructed for a Client on a sensitive site; bounded on 2 sides by Green Belt land on the edge of Tunbridge Wells. The brief was for a low maintenance home maximizing natural light and views of their garden.
The design is contemporary in layout and appearance but uses traditional materials and construction techniques that are complimentary to the nearby residential area. Principle rooms are orientated to maximize solar gain during the winter months to reduce heating costs by allowing sunlight to penetrate deep into the house. Heavy stone floors and walls absorb the heat and re-radiate it at night time. A large overhanging ‘floating’ roof over a central double height dining hall helps to shade the windows during summer.
High opening clerestory windows let warm air out and allow low morning and evening sun to penetrate to the heart of the house.
